Tech influencer and veteran YouTuber Lamarr Wilson, widely known online as “That Unboxing Guy,” has died at the age of 48. Officials confirmed on Friday that Wilson’s death was the result of suicide.
According to public records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, Wilson died from asphyxia and suffocation at a residence in Los Angeles on November 21. No further details surrounding the circumstances were released.
Concerns about Wilson’s well-being first emerged in mid-November when followers noticed an unusual absence from his social media platforms. Known for posting multiple times a week, Wilson had not shared new content for several days. His final video was uploaded on November 12.
The Wilson family confirmed his passing on December 13, sharing a heartfelt statement on Facebook. “We the Wilson Family are heartbroken with this news of Lamarr’s passing,” the post read. “He had so many projects in the making, scheduled and contracted with various tech and media companies requesting his expertise, and all of these accomplishments and achievements he could add to his portfolio.”
The family also expressed gratitude to Wilson’s management teams and to the many fans he mentored, supported, and inspired throughout his career.
Wilson built a massive digital presence, amassing nearly 3.5 million followers across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. He was celebrated for his energetic, comedic-style reviews of the latest technology, including smartphones, computers, gaming consoles, and smart home devices.
Throughout his career, Wilson collaborated with major global brands such as Google, Xbox, Apple, and Nintendo. He also hosted and produced two digital series for Mashable, YouTube Weekly and Socially Awkward, and was recently appointed as a judge for the upcoming CES Innovation Awards in Las Vegas scheduled for January.
