An Australian Army soldier has died and five other soldiers have been injured during a training exercise at the Mount Bundey Training Area, south-east of Darwin.
The incident happened on Monday 5 October, and Defence confirmed the death on Tuesday. The five injured soldiers were evacuated to Royal Darwin Hospital, the ABC and SBS News reported. The soldier who died has not been named.
What Defence Has Confirmed
The Department of Defence confirmed the incident but released no further details, according to the ABC. It has not said what happened during the exercise.
“Next of kin has been notified,” Defence said in a statement.
The department also asked for privacy for the people affected. “We request that the privacy of Defence members and families is respected at this time,” the statement said.
No information has been released about the condition of the five injured soldiers.
About Mount Bundey
The Mount Bundey Training Area lies south-east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The ABC describes it as a site used by the Australian Army and its allies for training. SBS News reported that joint exercises held there include forces from the United States and Singapore. Defence has not said which units or nations were taking part in Monday’s exercise.
Police Assisting the Coroner
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole sent police resources to assist after the incident, the ABC reported.
“We can’t comment on the cause of the injury to the defence personnel but we are assisting and we’re helping to investigate on behalf of the coroner,” he said.
Condolences From Political Leaders
Political leaders at territory and federal level responded to the news.
Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro offered her sympathy to the soldier’s family.
“I want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the young service personnel who lost their life yesterday,” she said, as reported by the ABC.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor also spoke about the five injured soldiers and their families.
“We are also thinking of the five soldiers injured in this incident. We wish them a full and swift recovery, and our thoughts are with their families who will be supporting them through this very challenging time,” he said.
Questions for the Investigation
The cause of the incident has not been made public. Defence has confirmed the death and the injuries, but it has not said what happened at Mount Bundey or what the soldiers were doing when they were hurt.
Several basic details are still unconfirmed. The soldier who died has not been named. No condition has been reported for any of the five injured soldiers. Defence has released no account of the exercise itself.
Northern Territory Police say they are helping to investigate on behalf of the coroner, and Commissioner Dole has said police cannot comment on the cause. Those answers are for the coroner’s investigation and for Defence.
Until then, the public record holds little beyond the death, the five injuries and the notification of the soldier’s family. This report will be updated as Defence or police confirm more. In other recent security reporting, wrp has covered the case of a Carlton man charged over an alleged Islamic State propaganda role.
