Four Changes After Germany
The Matildas went into the match after losing 4-2 to Germany on Saturday, The Guardian reported.
Joe Montemurro made four changes from the side that played Germany, according to Football Australia. It also reported that Steph Catley had left camp as part of a managed approach to the window.
Football Australia reported that Courtney Nevin and Charli Grant came in for Catley and for Ellie Carpenter, who started on the bench. McKenna replaced Amy Sayer, and Alana Murphy replaced Emily van Egmond.
The Guardian noted that McKenna and Murphy are “now playing together at Nottingham Forest”.
According to The Guardian, captain Sam Kerr said in the huddle before the match that “we should beat sides like this”.
A Fast Start and a Stubborn First Half
McKenna opened the scoring in the second minute. Football Australia said the goal came within 80 seconds, with McKenna finishing a cut-back from Clare Wheeler. The Guardian had her “powering a Wheeler cut-back into the roof of the net 80 seconds into the game”.
It was McKenna’s starting debut and her fourth cap, The Guardian reported.
Haiti equalised in the third minute. Football Australia reported that the goal came from Melchie Dumornay, who plays for OL Lyonnes.
From there the Matildas struggled to break Haiti down in the first half, according to The Guardian, which noted that Haiti are world No 47.
Wheeler was booked in the 30th minute, Football Australia’s report showed. McKenna then scored her second of the match in the 44th minute. The Guardian put it “just before half-time”, with McKenna “crashing her second in off a tackle” to “finish her own attacking move”.
Five Goals After the Break
The Guardian reported that the Matildas scored five goals in the second half.
The first, in the 53rd minute, was recorded by Football Australia as an own goal after Kerr had been played through by Foord. Nevin was booked in the 58th minute.
Foord then scored in the 65th minute, from Kerr’s pass. In The Guardian’s account, Kerr “spread the ball wide for Foord, all alone out on the left, who took a few unchallenged steps into the box before firing past the keeper to make it four”.
After that goal, McNamara, Galic, Remy Siemsen and Alexia Apostolakis came on “for the final half hour”, The Guardian reported.
Galic scored in the 73rd minute. Football Australia credited the pass to Murphy, and The Guardian called it “a fizzing Murphy through-ball”. Football Australia said it was her first senior international goal.
Wheeler, who had set up the opener, scored one of her own in the 80th minute. McNamara completed the win in the 90th minute, and Football Australia noted it was her fourth goal for Australia. The Guardian said she “made it two goals in two games”.
Colombia Next, Then the World Cup
The Guardian wrote that Montemurro “used the opportunity to establish depth in specific positions and develop chemistry in new combinations”.
The Matildas next play Colombia in Australia next month, according to Football Australia. The Guardian described it as “a two-game series against Colombia”.
The Guardian reported that there are four international windows left before the Women’s World Cup next June.
The win came days after South Melbourne became the first NPL club to win the Australia Cup. More match reports are in our football section.
